23-year-old Gay South African, Thapelo Makutle was murdered and mutilated in an alleged hate crime. Makutle recently won the Miss Gay pageant in a small town of Kuruman, and also participated in the Kimberley Out In Africa Gay and Lesbian Festival. He also volunteered at the Legbo Northern Cape, a lobby group for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT).
Allegedly, two men approached Makutle, who had just left a club and was heading home, they questioned him about his sexual orientation and his appearance. According to Democratic Alliance Parliamentary Leader in South Africa Lindiwe Mazibuko,
"This violent and gruesome assault is yet another reminder that many of our country’s people are still denied the basic rights and freedoms which our constitution enshrines ... There is a spate of homophobic hate crimes which have recently taken place across our country, including the repugnant and unconscionable crime of so-called 'corrective rape' committed against lesbian South African women."So sad.
