DIY Tips For Body Scrubs.

cl_ad93203ad9894bf3e7a21bc321400a14

Body scrubs like facial scrubs helps hydrate and exfoliate your skin, leaving it smooth and soft. People pay more attention to the face because that's where most acne and pimples occur but the body equally needs to be scrubbed aside your everyday bath.

Body scrubs help make the skin glow by getting rid of oil, dirt and dead cells. It reduces the appearance of cellulite to give you a youthful look.

Here are some easy DIY steps for home made oatmeal body scrubs. What you'll need;

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup ground oatmeal – Not the instant kind

1/4 cup pure honey

3/4 to 1 cup of oil – Example: Extra virgin olive, Jojoba, Grapeseed or Sweet Almond oil

1/4 teaspoonx Essential or Fragrance oil of choice (like vanilla) – Optional

Mix the brown sugar and oatmeal together in a large bowl. Add the honey and drizzle the oil over the mix. Mix everything together. When your mix is saturated and sinks to the bottom of the bowl and you have oil on top, you’re done. Add your essential oil or fragrance oil if you would like.

Now you can let your skin pores breathe well.

The Wonders Of Shea Butter.

Shea butter, also known locally as 'ori' is gradually gaining popularity among health conscious people. Shea butter is gotten from the nuts of wild karite trees. Some people who have known about it for ages claim it's the best skin healer and moisturizer. Aside its usage for beauty enhancement, its used for burns, ulcerated skin, stretch marks and dryness.

The local, unprocessed Shea butter is cheap. A handful would cost you like N50. It's thick in texture so its best to mix it with your moisturizer for a much better feel. For those that want to use strictly Shea butter, you can mix it with scented oil to improve the smell. Some other benefits of Shea butter includes;

  • It helps restore the elasticity of the skin. This is really good for new mothers as it helps put your body back to it's pre-pregnancy shape.
  • It helps to heal cuts and burns without scarring. Once you get the affected area clean,  apply shea butter to it continuously.
  • It has a natural sun screen protection. Bare in mind that its not enough and should not replace the use of regular sun screens.
  • It can be used as conditioner for the hair, protecting it from damages. Works best when applied to the hair itself not the scalp.
  • It helps reduce fine lines, laugh lines, pimples, eczema e.t.c. on the face.
  • It helps prevent bumps after shaving.
Note that Shea butter neither lightens nor darkens the skin. It specializes in skin repair only. For best results, wash your face/body before bed time and apply your Shea butter-moisturizer mixture. The skin repairs itself  overnight, the oil would then go into the skin and repair it.

Pregnant Women Who Sleep On Their Backs Risk Still Birth.

Recent research has proven that pregnant women who sleep on their backs are at greater risk of having a stillbirth.

'Stillbirth conception' is when a woman gives birth to an infant that has died in the womb, after at least surviving the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.

It was observed in Ghana that pregnant women who slept on their backs were found to be five times more likely to have a still birth or a baby with low birth weight. They also claimed that this problem can be avoided by ensuring pregnant women change their sleeping positions. Simple right?

The reason why this occurs is that women who sleep on their backs risked compression on the vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower part of the body to the heart. This means that the heart would not  pump as much blood as it usually does. The fetus needs proper blood circulation to carry food and oxygen to it  as well as waste away from it.

So how should pregnant women sleep?
Pregnant women should try sleeping on their sides, most especially on their left side because this can improve blood flow to the placenta. You can put a pillow behind you to keep you in that position. Do not sleep on your tummy!

Your Body And You: Effects Of Alcohol.

If we were to carry out a 'name the alcohol brands that you know' competition, a lot of you would be battling for the winning prize. But have you stopped to ponder on what all that alcohol is doing to your system?

Recent studies have shown that the moderate use of alcohol may have a beneficial effect on the coronary system. In general, it has been stated that for healthy people- a glass of wine for non- pregnant women and about two glasses for men can be considered as moderate. The size, age, weight, genetics of a person also contribute to what can be termed 'moderate'.

It's a different story for those that drink excessively. Drinking in excess has been known to cause serious harm to the body in the long run. Aside the immediate effects of acting stupid when under the influence of alcohol, here are some other things you should bare in mind when considering that bottle of alcohol.

Alcohol causes euphoria which depresses appetite. The result of this is that heavy drinkers tend to eat poorly and become malnourished.

Alcohol interferes with the body's metabolism of nutrients leading to the damage of the liver and digestive system.

Wonder why your tummy keeps getting bigger? Well it's partly due to the amount of fat accumulating in the liver as a result of your excess alcohol intake. This can also result in cancer.

Heart diseases. Alcohol raises the blood pressure, blood lipids thus increasing the risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

It also causes insomnia, anxiety and depression.

Drinking alcohol every now and then is not a crime. You should just bear in mind the effects of drinking in excess. As people say, "too much of everything is not good"

Self Esteem: Ways To Boost Your Self Image.

Self esteem is a term used to describe a person's overall emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It's a judgement about oneself and an attitude toward self. A person might see himself or herself way too highly, normally, or too lowly.

Low self-esteem being our focus can negatively affect virtually every part of your life including your relationships, your job, your health e.t.c. A lot of people have spent their entire life looking down on themselves. Several reasons might have caused this abusive parents, an experience from the past, loss of a loved one... it could be anything. It is actually possible to raise your esteem to a healthy level no matter how long you might have lived that way.

You can start by changing the way you think- about yourself and your life. This is essential in boosting your self-esteem. Its all in the head! no matter what others think or say, it all boils down to you accepting it or not. Decide that you would stop with the negative perception and embrace the positive.

Identify troubling conditions and situations. What is it about you or your surrounding that makes you feel the way you do, is it your physical appearance, your background, having to stand in front of people, fear of being rejected? note them, being able to identify the problem would help you solve it.

Become aware of your beliefs and thoughts of what you listed. What you say to yourself about them, your interpretation of what the situation means. they may be rational or irrational, positive, negative or neutral, based on false ideas e.t.c.

Now that you know some of what is bothering you, you can pin point negative or inaccurate thoughts and address them. Initially, it might be hard to reason beyond what you normally think but with time, you would realize that many of such thoughts are just opinions and not facts. I'm too this or that..., i'm not good enough because of something...says who? you are not the only one, people still love what you think is a flaw.

Try and list out all the things you like about yourself or what you do and dwell on those. It's easy to overlook the good for the bad, but that's an habit you would have to stop. When the negative thoughts come up, force them aside by thinking of the good things you have. Try to see the good in the bad, turn your weaknesses to strengths. It would require time but it would happen if you persist. Use hopeful statements, treat yourself with kindness and encouragement. Try to be as optimistic as possible that no matter what, you are able'. Forgive yourself on whatever issue it may be, don't be so hard on yourself. Life goes on things can get better or corrected. It's all about you being happy being you.

Jessica Alba Hospitalized Over 'Stroke Fear'.

The Fantastic Four star Jessica Alba was at home with her husband when she felt her hand went numb and began experiencing severe headaches and heart palpitations.

On US talk show, the Hollywood admitted that she was "terrified". She revealed to host Jimmy:
"Basically I thought I was having a stroke last week. I really, really thought I was. It was 2.30 in the morning and I woke up and my hand started to go numb. The whole entire thing went numb. It was dead, I couldn't move it. My whole arm went numb, I got cold sensations in the back of my neck to the front. I can't move my face."
The 31-year-old actress panicked when she looked up the internet and discovered that her symptoms were consistent with cerebrovascular accident (CVA), commonly called a stroke. Not wanting to treat the new discovery with levity, she turned to the only medic she knew would respond even at that late hour- her daughters' Paediatrician. She explained:

"I texted my Paediatrician. He's my kids' paediatrician, but he's the only person who will answer me at 2.30 in the morning. I texted him and I said, 'I have these symptoms... it's all going downhill!' He was like, 'You're a little young for this...'"

Jessica was eventually taken to a hospital for an MRI scan, which revealed she was suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, a relatively common condition that causes pain, numbness and a tingling sensation in the hand and fingers.

First Lady's HIV Campaign: "It Will Be A Thing Of The Past In 2015" She Says

The First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan on Thursday in a campaign pleaded that all hands should be on deck to eradicate HIV and AIDS by 2015. The First Lady made this appeal at the commencement of the campaign for the elimination and prevention of Mother to Child Transmission, to commemorate the  World AIDS Day.

The Theme for day is 'Getting To Zero'. She said;
"Since the first World AIDS Day in 1998, the day has assumed new significance; it has become a day when stakeholders renew their commitment to focus on specific issues that will make the biggest difference for the next years."The objective is zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths by 2015. I urge that to make this a reality, all pregnant women should access ante-natal care in health facilities.
"Even if they have traditional birth attendants, they should make sure they visit the health facility at least once during pregnancy and deliver their babies in a health facility and discussions on HIV should be encouraged in our communities." The president's wife noted that most HIV deaths were not caused by a lack of access to medication but by discrimination and urged that people showed support to people living with it.
"Remember that any of us could be infected with HIV; hence we should give them support in order to prolong their lives."Discrimination against carriers kills. No matter how you take anti-retroviral drugs, without love and support, you can still die."Please husbands, allow your wives to visit the clinic for ante-natal care, HIV testing and counselling and early education and awareness are key to combating the virus."
"Please reveal their HIV status to their wives on time. Some men know their status and take drugs secretly and leave the wives in the dark until the woman's case worsens".
Seriously? Could it be possible that some men know their status and even treat themselves, yet they leave their wife in the dark till it's too late for her to be treated? Wow things happen.
