The white smoke has bellowed from the Vatican's chimney; Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church have finally elected a new Pope.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, is the new Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Francis -as he is now called- was on Wednesday 13, 2013 chosen by the Roman Catholic Cardinals as the 266th Pontiff. The new Pope Francis is the first Pontiff from South-America and first non-European to be elected for almost 1,300 years and the first-ever member of the Jesuit order.
The Former Cardinal Bergoglio who is the first Pontiff to ever become Pope Francis I, has since his election been greeted and felicitated by World leaders and the 1.2 billion Catholics round the world. US President Barack Obama stated his regards to the newly elected Pope, saying:
While UK Prime Minister on the other hand turned to his twitter page to render his acknowledgement: "A momentous day for the 1.2billion Catholics around the world as His Holiness Pope Francis I is appointed the 266th Bishop of Rome.""On behalf of the American people, Michelle and I offer our warm wishes to His Holiness Pope Francis as he ascends to the chair of St Peter and begins his papacy. As a champion of the poor and the most vulnerable among us, he carries forth the message of love and compassion that has inspired the world for more than 2,000 years that in each other we see the face of God.
As the first pope from the Americas, his selection also speaks to the strength and vitality of a region that is increasingly shaping our world, and alongside millions of Hispanic Americans, those of us in the United States share the joy of this historic day."
Do you think the next Pope would be a Black person??
