Nigerians love for movies has earned Nollywood the title of the 3rd largest movie producers in the world. With a large population and the ever growing need for more content, our neighbour, Ghana infiltrated the market and before you know it, one could hardly tell the difference between a Nigerian and Ghanian movie. However, this smooth relationship has apparently gone sour
If recent reports are any thing to go by, then the sale or distribution of Ghanian movies would be illegal in Nigeria .This is in retaliation to the ban placed on the distribution of Nigerian movies in Ghana. According to Nigerian movie makers under the arm of Film, Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN), the embargo paced on Ghanian films takes effect from the end of June.
The FVPMAN chairman, Onistha branch , Mr.Uzo Godson Nwosu said this position was taken after the association's general meeting last weekend in Onitsha. .In his words
"Starting from the first week of August, no Ghanian film will be allowed to enter the Nigerian market again. We have resolved that no Ghanian film will be distributed within our controlled market. Our Ghanian counterparts have long stopped distributing our films in their country, and given this development, we have no choice than to reciprocate the gesture"
He also stated that any member of their association who fails to comply would be prosecuted or have his goods confisicated
Is it really possible to curtail the distribution of Ghanian films in a country as large as Nigeria?
